What scientists refer to as the “fat-free”, or “lean”, tissue compartment of the human body includes skeletal muscle tissue. This explains why when body builders talk about “gaining mass” they're usually referring to increasing the size of their muscles.

Muscle is the hallmark of the body builder. But mass isn't just about muscle size. Lacking sufficient mass to “fill it out”, a muscle may appear less shapely and well defined, for instance. And even if your fat mass remains the same, by increasing your muscle mass you may look considerably leaner. This is because the same amount of fat tissue is now displaced over a greater muscle mass, effectively “spreading it thin”
